I think we should be able to pick a second trait too. For all the reasons stated. I wouldn't have fun playing a Sim w/ too many "bad" traits. So I guess that's settled then?

I think so, but go vote on the poll. Make it official.

I think having the "Family Oriented" trait as the second would be wise. We don't need an heir who "Dislikes Children" trying to give birth to 3 possible heirs. (If 3 is the number of kids for a poll - I've forgotten)

The only problem with that is that if we are trying to get every LTW, that is limiting. Isn't it?

*Thinks a tropical island and a martini would be good about now*
Well you can still have an heir who dislikes children, if dislikes children is rolled as one of the three random traits and you have already asigned your optional trait. I've already asigned mine as 'artist' to baby Darcy as I didn't want him being an evil grump. I'm still worried that some people here who don't play legacies are still mixed up on this point.
You all do understand the other three traits are randomly assigned by clicking on the randomize dice?
Also the second trait is up to the person playing. We've already taken a poll on this. Personally I think Family orientated on every sim will limit LTW. Would we really want say three heirs who want to be 'surrounded by family'? Jill you are quite free on your turn to use family orientated as your optional trait of choice. I don't know if this is available to new borns or not. So far the poll is seven in favour to none against so I figured it was carried.

LTW for 'Family Orientated', always has the standard five to choose from, so if you want 'Surrounded by family', it is your option, but you still have four others to choose from, I don't see the problem as you are not locked into just choosing one, you have five choices!

I don't see the problem as you are not locked into just choosing one, you have five choices! Yes, but one of the TS3 point challenges is for EVERY LTW to be met, so by making "Family Oriented" a trait for every generation is limiting.

Just so I understand... Every sim born to each heir must: 1) have the Charismatic Trait 2) can have any trait the player chooses 3) must randomize the remaining 3 traits with the die.
Because traits are limited at birth, this is done gradually, and in any order the player chooses. Do I have it right?

*Hallelujah Chorus The light dawns! Don't worry peeps. I plan to print out and study the rules before my turn comes up. Although I read many legacies, I've never played one. I think Jo's right & that's why I'm having a hard time wrapping my fragile little brain around this stuff.

Jo joins in with the Hallelujah Chorus!! Yes, that is exactly right Jilly.
Really, although on first glance dealing with randomness seems like "Eeeek!" It is what makes part of doing a legacy interesting. Sometimes (Well I know with TS2 this happens) You learn to enjoy things that you would have thought before no way. It's learning to accept and even enjoy traits or attempt LTW that you might have never have tried otherwise. That and genetics is what doing 10 generations is all about.

Well, I was going to do my best to explain it, but it seems that it has been pretty-much cleared up now. I think, though, that the optional trait should be able to saved until all the traits are in at adulthood if the player so chooses to do so. That way, you will be able to get rid of the most undesirable trait and not have to worry about getting stuck with one you find 'intolerable'.
