I've sworn off of bad boys!
Good Luck, Harley!!! When I hit the lottery, you will be my official computer builder! (don't tell my dh - that would bum him out cuz he's my current computer builder! Lol)
Great banner, Tina!

;)My PC is a Dual core!but my son wants a Quad/better than mine (guess who's paying?) Aaron says over clocking shortens the life of the CPU, but as far as I know by the time it gives up, you have already updated it to the next whizzbang PC component!

Overclocking does shorten the life of a CPU ... From like 10 years to 7 years...LOL But the rest of the components will also be dieing by then... If properly done then it typically has no ill effect.Done incorrect and the heat generated can and will kill it early...Proper cooliong is crutial too for a good OC..That involves case and Heatsink cooling combined. What quad is he hunting and WHY??? Quads are generally for multi-taskers and games that have hugh texture files, and have a built in arkitexture to use the extra cares.. Tell me his needs and I will tell you if he even needs a quad.... But,,, The best all aroung quad for socket 775 is the Q6600 at 2.4. But just the GO scalr version..It will easily overclock to 3.6 on air... BUT...Not all chips will OC well or at all .. It really depends on your motherboard and speed of ram as to what it will do.And again case cooling and heatsink.. SO...What does he need a quad for? ?

Harley, I tried to get Aaron to reply to this but he says I can handle it! ~He has a big 'Viper' case, (I mean this is the biggest case I have ever seen!) that would support an ice cooling system or water cooling,(he wants ice!) he wants his PC to be used in his work(if he ever finishes his courses!) he is currently learning programing,he can already put PC's together & has worked doing that, but he wants to do more & wishes to apply that to making games, & testing said games, shock, horror! to me, for art works to be used by my son for his games(because he wants me to do that!My brother already has tried to get me to do the same for him & his games!) We are building it piece by piece as that is all I can afford at this time! he most definitely wants a Quad core, to handle what he wants to achieve, I have been asking around & getting ideas as to the best components to use (I have a list somewhere!)but this is the time to get it straight before I start outlaying money! so any help will do!

Ok Good case... He will never need water cooling..Its all a total waste and for those in comptiions to push Overclocks to the max..Those OCs can not be used on an everyday system....
For starters..GIGABYTE X48 mobo ... Intel Q9550 that will OC on air to at least 3.6 stable from 2.83
V-Raptor HardDrives or at least any WD with a 32MB cache....
Freezer Pro 7 is all the CPU cooling he needs.
Get two HDDS..One for the OS anmd one for Video Editing
Have him sign up and download the new Win7 RC as its good till next July and its free....32 or 64 bit version.Or get both and run one as a virtual machine with VMWare sortware.
Avoid at all costs Sound cards and Nvidia Vid card combinations...To many conflicts....
I highly recomemnd ATIs new 4890 with 1 gig V-Ram mem....Beautiful colors and rendering abalities for graphics..
Need more ..Feel free to ask

Thank you so much Harley, please forgive my tardiness,I'm on a 'go slow' as we had our wireless Internet stolen, & I have nothing left till the next month, it frustrates me & I get fed up & quit because it is taking to long to load a page, my son Aaron read everything you said,& said OK now were is my PC! I directed him to have the Viper as he wanted Alien-wear,but after looking at the price I looked for a alternative, hence the Viper, it was a birthday present, & the PC is the same, & hopefully it will help him! & don't worry I 'm sure I have more Q! ~PS~ Tina, sorry I have tried several times to tell you, great job with the Graphics, but every time I answer or leave message my net says sorry,no connection, or what ever! & I lose the message I'm sending,& I get a bit fed up with re-typing the same thing over & over!

Stay from AlienWare..They are now owned by Dell and you get the famous *DELL* tech support..They could, care less and not be bothered....
I will look into Viper too..
A shame you don't live in the states ..I would make him a killer rig for way less....
