Well, I have been doing a bit of reading on the sims 3 official site and here is something similar that happened to someone that was reported on Dec 8, so they have yet to fix it obviously.

Soon after I installed WA because a few friends raved about the content and the new game interactions. All seemed fine for about 3 days then on a 4th or 5th trip to China my sim has the heart broken moodlet from a death and his name has been changed. Unknown to me he married an old hag from China and managed to have a child even though she was an elder.

It's happening again on a clean install of the game and a new sim. Same scenario travels to all places a few times then all of a sudden I find out he's married again, name has changed only this time he has children in China and Egypt, and has multiple relationships? He's married to a sim in his home hood and she traveled with him to Egypt.

While I can handle the food going bad in the fridge, having random children pop up and random marriages and name changes just takes all the fun out of the game.

Another one from Nov 30:

Once my sim visited China, his last name changed and somehow he had a wife and 2 kids in China! WHAT?! I didn't do any of that.

Dec 18:

I have a high bug problem. My sim became a family with Moussa and even that I dont know how! My sims just travelled to Egypt and I looked through the relationship thing and it said my sim is the father of the family! My sims is single!

My sim suddenly became the mother of an Egyptian child after installing the 2.33 patch. No mods, nothing from the exchange. When choosing to load a game, the family name still shows as "Dresden", but in the game, my sim's last name is now Hawas.

One has popped into the main bug thread a few times, but only keeps saying stuff like 'thanks for being patient while work on it'.

I was going to reply in the the thread I linked above this morning, but the stupid site kept getting errors and wouldn 't let me. I saved my reply, though, so I'm going to try again later.
