I don’t know why this happened to me. I didn’t do anything wrong. I was paralyzed with fear while the searing pain was jabbed and twisted into my spine. “That’s it. I’m going to die.” I thought. I suddenly had a flashback from two days ago which led to this catastrophe.
I scurried across the valley with my fellow hunter gatherers. It was night and we didn’t have much more time until the came. I felt the ground shake. It was them. I shouted out to my friends to run faster as I tried not to imagine the familiar disfigured faces of the hideous creatures that harassed us. I found a piece of bread on the ground that one of my friends dropped and continued to run. I spotted a cave ahead. I found my self gasping for air as they came over the mountains, their sickly smell already seeping into the valley. Another big rumble shook the ground and we safely jumped into the cave. “You think they saw us Tom?” asked Sam. “No, I don’t think so.” I answered.
These giants-no, I prefer the term monsters, showed up to this area a long time ago during the time of my ancestors. Since then, they’ve terrified us to the point where we must flee for our lives every time we try to hunt for food. They are hideous and as tall as the sky. Every time they see us they stomp up and down upon the earth and roll their googly eyes about as they open their horrid mouths producing spine-tingling screams. They even try to squash us with their leathery feat. That’s the least of our problems. My mother said that when I and my sisters were still in her belly, the Monsters were the ones responsible for the sickness that spread throughout the valley. They used their magic to conjure up green gas that polluted my village. My mother called it “The Green Gas Plague.” She said everyone was coughing and spitting up blood. The plague killed my father. It wiped out half of the village and it took us a long time to recover.
Now the Monsters set up traps. We can never know when a piece of food is actually a trap that chops our bodies in half. Sometimes we find others who are still alive, begging for us to help them. Sadly we must watch them suffer or end their misery for the poles pinning them down are impossible for us to lift.
As I looked out of the cave, I saw the monsters leave. I motioned to my friends that the coast was clear. We arrived safely to the village and shared the food we gathered with our brothers and sisters. We are scavengers and rely on the Monsters for food. (Luckily they are a sloppy lot - a crumb of their bread is a loaf to us). After our feast I went to my room to sleep for the rest of the day when my mother came in. She looked weathered and had a frown upon her face.
“Why must you continue to do this?” she sighed.
“Hey, we got food. You should be happy.” I said folding my arms pouting. “I’m not happy Tom.” she said “You’re putting the lives of you’re friends and yourself in jeopardy. And for what? To get a piece adventure?!” she yelled.
“But…” I stammered.
“Those Monsters and will kill you with out a second thought! I don’t want anyone else in this family dieing! You can‘t go out there again!” she said running away as she went into a fit of tears. She was really sensitive about my father’s death and hated the Monsters. Out of my brothers and sisters, I was the most curious one. That was why she was always so strict with me. I guess I understand why. Every now and then I would secretly watch them just to find the purpose of the Monsters existence. Most of the time, they would just be sitting down starring at things. Every now and then they would go into the valley to eat the food they store in their humongous cave.
The day passed and it was night again. It was the time we could finally relax for night was the time they slept. I was playing hide-and-seek with a group of friends when Sam approached me. She was always very frail ever since I knew her. She had a soft voice and her bones must have been as thick as a hair strand. A look of terror was spread across her face and she was trembling.
“What’s wrong?” I asked
“Something…something’s in the valley.” she stammered her voice shaking.
“Do, need me to check it out for you?” I asked.
“Yes, yes that would be nice. Follow me.” said as she quickly turned around and started walking towards the valley.
Of course my curiosity was aroused and I simply had to follow her. When we got to the valley, fear gripped my heart. Something didn’t feel right. The smell in the air was of death.
“What’s in the valley?” I asked as I felt the back of my neck prickle.
“Over there.” she whispered pointing her trembling finger at a big mass of fur far away.
It was snoring so loud that it was causing the ground to vibrate. It wasn’t as big as the Monsters but it seemed more dangerous.
“I went to the edge of the valley to find some food when I saw that.” she said.
“Wow…What is that?” I asked horrified.
“I don’t know; earlier I saw the Monsters holding and petting it. I think it must be their…pet.” she said
“These Monsters are too stupid to actually socialize! They must be smarter than I thought.” I said
The Creature rolled over in its sleep and Sam squealed as she ran away, “Sorry; I can’t stand being here any longer! We shall surely die if we do!”
I was able to examine the Creature a little better when it turned to face me. It was a very different creature from the Monsters. They were always too large and slow to catch us. This Creature seemed more capable of catching us. It was much more hairy and had fangs and claws. It was a pure monster. It reeked of death and drooled in its sleep. When I was done observing the Creature, I came back in the morning to see if it obtained any intelligence. I climbed down into the valley and peaked out of my hiding place. There was the Creature playing with the Monster. Playing? Something so horrible and terrifying to do such an innocent thing was too strange for me to comprehend. The Monster had a floppy object attached to a rope that the Monster was flailing about as the hairy creature jumped around after it. The Creature leaped for the floppy object, grabbed it in its mouth and pulled with all its might so that it popped off the rope and landed right in front of me. It was a dummy of me! It looked like me! This was getting way too weird for me. I tried to run out of the hiding place before the Creature got to his dummy but it was too late. His evil eyes already caught me. He licked his chops. I realized in horror that these creatures want to eat us! The Monsters actually train them to kill us because they, themselves are too slow.
I ran even though the Creature saw me for I knew that even if I went back to the hiding place it would kill me anyway. I ran with all my might but the Creature was right on my tail. I ran until I couldn’t breathe. ”Oh, if only there was a cave!” I thought as my eyes raced from side to side searching. I felt the shadow of the Creature creep over my body as I was loosing speed. I then saw its sharp white claws gleaming in the light above me. “Oh this is it! I’m done for.” I thought. I then felt a sharp pain in my back and was thrown to the other side of the room. The Creature then crouched down starring at me, ready to pounce. “This is it. I’m going to die.” I thought as it leaped forward.
“Ewww!” screeched a girl in a kitchen as she threw down her cat toy and picked up her cat. “Mr. Tinkers caught another mouse." The cat wouldn’t let go of the mouse squirming around within its clenched jaws. “It’s not even dead yet!” said the girl gagging.
“Oh yes it is!” said her father happily. “Those are just muscle reflexes. I don’t even think mice have feelings. I’m so glad we got Mr. Tinkers, that’s the third mouse these passed two days! Having a cat is so much more inexpensive. The bill for the exterminator was up the roof and he didn’t even kill them all! Plus the neighbors’ dog became ill from the rat poison! Not only that, but I don‘t have to clean the blood off these freaken mouse traps anymore!”
“It stopped moving.” said the girl morbidly
“Okay,” said her dad, “after the cat’s had his fun with it, I’ll throw this little infestation in the trash. Can you believe people actually have mice for pets?”
Tell me how long it took you to find out that the main character was a mouse. I bet it wasn't long...heh....heh....
I don't know.... I have a thing for twist endings....
