Copy pasted my LJ post. I think I'm going to tear my hair out! My daughter had her first bout of school sores a few weeks ago and we did the antibiotic medicine and cream routine, they went away. Few days ago she gets this small suspicious sore on her bottom again (which was where they were) so I thought right I'll hit it with a bit of that antibiotic cream. This morning we have a large weeping school sore. Arrghhh!!! Just thinking about it makes me want to scratch! I'm going on a washing, ‘antisepticing’ rampage! Does anyone know if Dettol safe to stick in the fabric softener container of a front loader? Or is there something else that would kill germs. Now she is going to miss out on her gymnastics and swimming lessons-again, and we stayed home from church this morning as well. She is not a happy camper. Adding I've gone around with pine-o-clean disinfectant and wiped the toilet seat, taps, door knobs, her computer mouse and key board and the Wii remote and TV remote. Those are the main things she touches that others also touch. I'm washing her sheets now, but I couldn't find any Dettol, so they are just washing and I thought I would hang them outside on the line. Really not sure if that will kill germs. *Thinks I might go crazy*

Awww sorry to hear that! I too do not know what that is so I'm not sure if my advice will do any good but I suggest the hot water as Holley said and keep wiping down everything. I hope she gets better soon!

I should have used hot water. But I guess I am so used to using my quick wash on 40 that I did that. I went around looked for Dettol, couldn't find any so just turned it on. I am drying the sheets on the line outside so hopefully the sun will kill some of the germs.
Thanks for the well wishes.

www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.betterhealth.vic.gov.au%2Fbhcv2%2Fbhcarticles.nsf%2Fpages%2FImpetigo_or_school_sores&ei=joxzTeHKF4-u8AbyyoG8Dw&usg=AFQjCNEHLE7wxVAuvX_KxTwxWChFJoz1tAThis site recommends washing her things seperate from everyone else's, and also clipping her fingernails short, so that she doesn't carry the infection in them from scratching herself, then touching something/someone else. It seems she has to be getting this from someone she's coming in contact with - maybe that swimming or gymnastics class has a child carrying this? It says (either in this article or another one I googled) that sometimes children can carry this without having symptoms, and that it's easily spread by nose-picking. (and what kid doesn't do that?) I guess the nose is one place this virus likes to live. If it's her bottom that keeps getting the infection, it may be the places she's going that need to disinfect their bathrooms with anti-bacterial cleaners. (swimming/gymnastics) Once she's past it, you may want to bring your own cleaner and clean the seats, etc before she uses them in those places. It could even be just a bench in the pool or gym area. Obviously, lots and lots of handwashing for all members of the household, again with the anti-bacterial soap. If the person who keeps giving it to her doesn't have symptoms, they wouldn't know they are passing this around, so it could turn into a real nightmare, if that's the case. The only thing you can really do is make sure she takes a good shower with the antibacterial soap after being able to go back to these places. As for the laundry, only hot water and bleach will kill any germs there. (they don't make anti-bacterial laundry soap) But the bleach combined with the hottest water you can use should do the trick. (a color-safe bleach should work just as well, if you need that) Good luck, Jo. This sounds terrible to deal with! {hugs}

I figure it's from gymnastics. One day at class she used the toilets (I always try to get her to go at home before hand, but you know kids.) Anyway she managed to open the toilet door at gym onto her toe and cut it. This cut didn't heal properly and this is where it all started. It erupted in a large sore on her bottom and that one on her toe. Swimming is at a privet house and she doesn't use the toilet there as it's only half an hour. Gym on the other hand is down at the PCYC (Police-Citizens Youth Association) and last for two hours and see's a lot of people going through for different kind of classes and events. It's hard to see how it keeps getting on her bottom as she wears a pair of close fitted dance shorts underneath her leotard, but I can't think where else it would be from. I think we better alert someone there, but I bet they won't do anything. Hmm I never washed her leotard in hot water. Although she has undies under that again, she is well covered! Her finger nails are short. But I hadn't washed her stuff separate. I'd washed stuff and washed sheets and given them separate hand towels. Although being kids they forgot and still used each other’s hand towels. *head desk* Daniel has so far not had any. I'm going to get some Dettol today and use that in the wash, that kills germs. Maybe you don't have Dettol over there. It's a liquid. Also I should get some antibacterial soap, I haven't used that. I do have an after wash sanitiser that we've been using. You know it's like a blue gell and you rub it in after washing your hands. I've also used some Pine-O-Clean (That’s disinfectant) and I've wiped around places with that.

Late to the thread, sorry Jo! I hope Sarah gets better soon!
Dettol is at least good for wiping down and disinfecting, I've never used it in a wash as it doesn't bode well for sensitive skin. But like the others said, lots of hot water and anti-bacterial stuff everywhere.
Hope it clears up, it sounds a nightmare to deal with.

Thanks Amylu. The Dr said it's not uncommon to get it again and there is quite a bit of it around town. I just hope we well and truly eradicate it this time.

I was going to ask "What the heck are school sores?", but thanks to Jill's link, I know now. Wow, Jo, sorry to hear that. I hope it all clears up very soon. I know that poor child has to be miserable. I am sending positive vibes your way for a speedy solution.

Thanks Tina, I'll pass on your well wishes. She made you all a Beado graphic posted down on the graphics board instead of sending everyone cards. the actual sores aren't bothering her too much now, even though the main one is still about the size of a 10 coin, she didn't complain of any itching yesterday and it isn't sore when she sits if she has a bandaid over the large one. Rather she absolutely hates having the antibiotic cream up her nose. Apparently that is where this darned bug lives. The cream has to be wiped around inside the nostril twice a day and isn't a huge amount-but she constantly wants/trys to wipe it out.

Awww, the poor, sweet little thing! Hopefully the fact the itching has calmed means she is on the mend. I will pop over and take a peek at the graphic now.
