so, I have a confession to make... I read the posts you all make and see that you are playing multiple generations of families... I haven't actually really played the game I usually get so caught up with the building/altering/decorating/landscaping of a house and with the creation of characters... that I never get around to playing. I tried having a baby with on couple once... omg... babies are so much work!!! My sims apparently got the stupid gene code cause they didn't want to feed or clean or play with the baby... I had to direct every bit of care with that kid... if I wanted to do that, I'd have one of my own again... NOT!!!!!!!!... so I made a lovely self-sim the other day, decorated her house to perfection... a lovely little abode imo... I need to do the landscaping... then I might try to play her. I made her single (and yes, I cheated and maxed her skills and talents... and motherloded her house to wonderful. I have already contracted with the maid and gardener so she won't have to be bothered by those trivial details!!!... so... whew... I feel much better having gotten that off my chest... now I don't feel as much like a poser

Hey Knyght, I'm glad you posted a thread! ;D Although I think it likely belongs in the sims discussions forum so I'll probably move it over there soon so it doesn't get lost in all the general babble in this forum. Some folks actually do 'play the game' by building/decorating, etc instead of playing sims through their lives. I actually don't have too many multi-generational families because I never quite get that far with a family. I have some sims with grandchildren and that's about it. Some folks play legacies and get WAY further than that. There are SO many things I haven't done in this game yet. If I did them all, it would almost feel like a new game to me.

You build houses!!! I've tried my hands at it and I'm getting better. I just built the simselves a house is plesantview actually it was originally the new legacy house but I was attached to the old one so I redid that and put the simselves in the new one. It looks good in my opinion (except for a few details that make me wonder what I was thinking!!!
Oh and another thing. Have you uploaded any of the homes you built and are they base game only?
I never got past second generation with the families I made. Only the legacy family because I had to.

Oh yea... you should upload your simself and post a link in the simselves thread in the links forum. You could possibly wind up in a story or something around here!

I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to upload my simself or any houses I made. ^^ I'm sure you guys can tell me though :-)
and remember I cheated my simself... so she is nearly as perfect as I am *gag* seriously, she is maxed out on all skills... and as soon as I can find the cheat items again she will have a diverse group of interests as well ^^.
As far as houses... I can make a non-decorated one with just walls and base game windows and doors and upload it (once you guys tell me how). That way you can pick your own wallpapers and stuff if you want it.
I had kind of started experimenting with the building techniques when I lost interest for a bit, but feel the urge growing again.
hmmm we could have a contest...
pick one house to decorate and landscape... free to use any custom content you have loaded (a lot of it is base game compatible)... and post our pics... and see what each other would do... the differences in our tastes and styles... could start a whole new dialog :-)

Tina is best when it comes to explaining things. She usually accompanies her words with pics. So I'll leave that part to her.

I don't have any grandparents in the game - I cheat to keep everyone young. I only aged one sim to die of old age - Polination Tech's wife. Then I cheated him younger & hooked him up with a full blood alien girl. I play a family to a certain place, usually just before the kids turn adult, then play a different family. When I'm writing a story, I usually "play" the story out.
I like building, too. I was never very good at it, but I entered a bunch of challenges, where I picked up a bunch of really good tips that helped me learn a lot. Lynda is working on a building challenge here - I think it has it's own thread. I'd definitely be interested, if someone wants to run one!
Cheating your simself won't matter. The one you upload will be from Body Shop, not the game, so money, stats, etc won't carry over. To upload a sim, you have to create it in Body Shop, not the game. Now, Tina can tell you about certain hacks that you can use to get an in-game sim copied, but the "official" way in Body Shop is the ony way I know. Also, you have to be registered on the Sims2 website. The upload will show up on your simpage. If you haven't set one up yet, you might want to.

The above ladies are right. A packaged sim will be exactly the way it was created in body shop. I don't think there's any way to avoid that. The only way they keep their stats is if they are on lots, but... downloading and installing lots with families is a very bad thing because even though the sims have lost memories/relationships with everyone not on the lot, it still brings fragments of files from memories/etc into your game files that can cause problems down the road.
To package a sim, you have to create it in body shop. Then you go to the package sims section in body shop and down on the bottom right, you'll see options to package to a file, or to package to the sims2.com. I have started packaging mine to files and then uploading them to box.net because whenever I upload to the official site, they always get culled anyway...lol.
Packaging/uploading lots is done in the same way, but from inside the game. Whenever you click on a lot to enter it, you'll see an icon with a little arrow pointing up with a symbol that looks sort of like the world above it. When you click that, it will ask you if you want to package your lot to a file or thesims2.com. Then you just follow the instructions from there. I also have trouble uploading lots to the exchange because the upload often fails so I've taken to packaging my lots and uploading them somewhere else as well.
Oh and the contest idea sounds like fun. It would be interesting to see what different people do with the same house.

Ugh! Everything causes problems with that stupid game! If only I weren't addicted!

I have actually never heard of people NOT playing the game I know people who like to build or write, but I thought they all played too. I have dabbled in both building and storytelling, but I enjoy just playing the game most I think. I have only gotten to generation 3 personally. I was actually on my way to breaking my record when I started to have computer troubles. That, however, will be fixed soon (I hope) and I will get back to playing

I have made my feeble try at playing these cartoon people...LOl It very much frustrated me ..Tina said I was overplaying them and to let them alone some..I struggled to say the least... I never had enough time to get them home from work, work on their skills, keep their stats up,get a shower and use the bathroom...LOL Plus find time to eat and relax...UGH...I was horrible at it all.. Then I discovered building, and Tina motherload hack..So I too enjoyed building over playing..I was never to play another... The Sims is once again not on my new computer...

Watching Harley trying to play was quite amusing! Although... Harleyman... you NEVER built the first darned thing and you know it! Or... do you? He actually was decorating already-built houses. I don't think he even knows how to use the wall tool, although I told him he should try his hand at building. One your main problems was that you never got the hang of looking at their wants/needs panel and taking care of those and the skills/friends they needed for promotions, etc. Harley... dude... it's NOT rocket science!

Harley, it is VERY hard for newbies. I introduced the game toa friend and she said it moved too fast. I told her "then pause the game." New Sims can be difficult, that's why people have hacks and cheat codes
